This scholarship was created to honor the life of our beloved grandmother, Etta Pearl Weston Douglas, who was born and raised in Portland, Jamaica. As a young woman, she had dreams of becoming a nurse. However, with limited financial means, her family was not able to provide her that educational opportunity. Understanding the financial constrains in her family, Etta Pearl went on to work as a waitress, marry, and have six children. As a young wife and mother, Etta Pearl left her home in Jamaica to come to the U.S. to prepare a better life for her family. Throughout that process, she, and four of her six children, became U.S. citizens. Etta Pearl's children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are direct beneficiaries of her hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. Because she valued higher education so much, yet never had the opportunity to achieve it, we honor her life with this scholarship fund. The success of two generations and counting stand on her shoulders.
One recipient will be awarded the Etta Pearl Weston Douglas Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 for costs towards tuition and fees.
